CWA-Lymphoma & Leukemia Society Fundraiser - Ocean Beach

CWA OB Fundraiser for LLS

Join the Fight

Happy Summer!

If you haven’t been down to see us at our new location in Ocean Beach, you need to stop by! We are on the corner of Newport and Cable Street, and this coming week we’re going to be hosting our first fundraiser!

California Wild Ales has teamed up with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society to host its second fundraiser for the association. The fundraiser will occur at our new location in Ocean Beach, in honor of the co-owner Zack Brager’s mother, Rebecca Jungreis-Brager, on Tuesday, June 15th, at 5:00 p.m. at 4896 Newport Ave., Ocean Beach.

This cause has a very personal connection for Zack because he lost his mother to this horrific disease on July 15th, 1999. Additionally, the fundraiser will support Derek Dawson on his quest to become Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Man or Woman of the Year.

As part of this event, the brewery has created a new beer named after Zack’s mother, Rebecca Jungreis-Brager, called RJB. The beer is a unique blend of golden sour ale with blueberries from the Carlsbad Flower Fields and Cabernet Franc grapes from Summer’s Vineyard in Escondido. It’s special to the brewery because it’s the first time it has made a sour ale using Brettanomyces at bottling.

The process requires the ale to sit a little longer in the bottle, resulting in an added layer of funk to the finished product. Finally, after resting in the bottle for approximately five months, the beer is ready to be shared. This method also allows it to age beautifully for years to come. The finished product has a soft and bright tannic character and a tropical funkiness from the late dose of the Brettanomyces yeast.

The first fundraiser at our Sorrento Valley location was a huge success. We couldn’t be more excited to hold the same event at our new Ocean Beach location and invite the community to come together to support a truly worthy cause and try some great beer.

All Donations will Benefit LLS

California Wild Ales will donate all tips from the evening to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, along with 15% of the bottle proceeds. In addition, people can make a direct donation at: https://pages.lls.org/mwoy/sd/sd21/zbrager

This event will be OB’s first significant fundraising effort – the first of many to come – and we are happy to have a platform like this to give back.

Join us for some beers to help support this specail cause!

Our California Wild Ales tasting room in Ocean Beach is located at 4896 Newport Ave., Ocean Beach, CA., and is open every day (Monday -Thursday 12:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 12:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.

Customers can visit: www.californiawildales.com or call (855) WILD-ALE or (855) 945-3253 to place orders in advance.

We have teamed up with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and host a fundraiser for the association on Friday, May 21 st starting at 5:00 pm at the brewery’s Sorrento Valley location at 4202 Sorrento Valley Blvd., Ste. L, San Diego, CA, 92121.

This cause has a very personal connection for Zack Brager, one of our founders, who lost his mother to this horrific disease on July 15th, 1999. The fundraiser will
support Derek Dawson on his quest to become Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Man or Woman of the Year.

“It has been my goal to give back as much as possible. This is why I’m partnering with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to make sure that no one loses a loved one to cancer,” said Zack. “Come out and join us for this extraordinary evening and support a great cause.”

As part of this event, the brewery will release a new beer named after Zack’s mother, Rebecca Jungreis-Brager, called RJB. “This beer is extremely special to me, as it’s the first beer the we have made using Brettanomyces at bottling,” said Zack.  “This process requires a little longer time in the bottle, but the result adds a

Sour Sundays at California Wild Ales

Join us for Sour Sundays!

By cwa-blog

Join us Sunday… or any day for that matter… to sip on sours with your friends at California Wild Ales.

We absolutely love funky, sour beer. If your tastebuds are tired of the same old same old, then wake them up with a refreshing Wild Ale.

We are not talking about a quick kettle sour that takes 3 weeks to develop its tartness. At California Wild Ales, we create complex barrel-aged sour beers aged in oak barrels for 9-12 months to achieve a massive depth of flavor. The majority of our beer is then racked onto fresh local fruit and allowed to re-ferment for an additional 4-8weeks until it’s tart and funky. Our process may take way longer than a kettle sour but rest assured it is worth the wait.

If you are ready to send your tastebuds on an adventure, they won’t soon forget… then stop by our barrel house and prepare yourself for an epic journey of flavor.  So make this upcoming Sunday a Sour Sunday!   Join us at our Sorrento Valley location, and taste what you have been missing.  Open Friday – Sunday 12-5pm

CWA comes to Ocean Beach

By cwa-blog

Let’s go Wild in OB!

We started California Wild Ales five years ago with one goal…to bring our funky sour beers to San Diego.

Fast forward five years, and we are ready to bring our concept home to Ocean Beach. We are beyond excited to bring our funky brews to this fabulous neighborhood. The style of beer we make is different from the typical SD beer style of IPAs. Our adventurous wild ales are the perfect beverage for those who want to send their taste buds on an epic journey. We hope to follow in the footsteps of other iconic OB locations such as OB Noodle House, Hodads, Nicos, OB Hardware, among others.

Our new tasting room is roughly 1200 sq/ft and will feature 16 taps, 10 of which will be our sours and the remaining beers we have reserved for some surprises.
We recently signed a lease for a new tasting room that comes in at roughly 1,200 square feet and is equipped with 16 taps. DeWitt and Brager expect to offer at least 10 different sour beers, with the remaining half-dozen taps reserved for some “surprises.”

We are thrilled to become part of the fabric of this vibrant community of Ocean Beach.  Follow our escapades on Instagram and Facebook as we build out the new space with our signature California Wild Ales style.

Black is Beautiful - California Wild Ales

Black is Beautiful – Collaborative Effort

By cwa-blog, event

Black is Beautiful

California Wild Ales had been working on a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dark Sour … and when Weathered Souls introduced the Black is Beautiful initiative we knew we had to be a part of it. Introducing our very first Dark Sour… Black is Beautiful.

The Black is Beautiful initiative, created by Weathered Souls Brewing Co., is a collaborative effort amongst the brewing community and its customers, in an attempt to bring awareness to the injustices that many people of color face daily.

100% of this beer’s proceeds will go to support Color of Change.  Color of Change leads campaigns that build real power for Black communities. They challenge injustice, hold corporate and political leaders accountable, commission game-changing research on systems of inequality, and advance solutions for racial justice that can transform our world.

Made in collaboration with our friend Samantha Olsen, we chose a grain bill extremely reminiscent of an Imperial Stout. Coming in around 9% abv, it has a light pleasant roasted character with deep notes of plum and a malty sweetness to compliment the acidity for an extremely well balanced sour stout/dark sour.  This beer has been aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months and bottle conditioned for an additional 6 weeks.  This beer was just about ready when the Black is Beautiful initiative was created so we bottled it up and got involved.

Only (100) 500ml bottles total, so make sure to reserve your bottles today.

Pick up available starting Saturday, August 1st at 12 pm.

If you are unable to pickup on Saturday, August 1st, no worries.   We are open for pickup Wednesday – Sunday 12-3 pm.

ONLY 100 Bottles Available

We are proud to be San Diego’s only all barrel-aged sour house and we are constantly striving to bring you new funky brews.  We are honored to be a part of such an amazing initiative as Black is Beautiful.

As always we keep 10 sours on tap at our tasting room.  If you are looking to take your tastebuds on a funky adventure … pickup a few bottles and taste what you’ve been missing.

Now Delivering Outside of California

California Wild Ales begins selling its barrel-aged sour beer to seven new states including Alaska, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and the District of Columbia

California Wild Ales, San Diego’s only all-sour brewery, has begun shipping its barrel-aged wild ale outside of California. Sour beer lovers in Alaska, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and the District of Columbia can now order beer online from California Wild Ale’s website and have it delivered directly to their front door. Also, the brewery has launched it’s 2020 bottle club, called “The Yeastie Beasties,” giving customers exclusive access to member-only beer and other exciting perks.

“We’ve been selling our funky, fruit-forward sour ales since 2015 and have focused mainly on serving customers in our tasting room where we serve 10 beer on tap, making us San Diego’s largest sour-only brewery,” said Bill DeWitt, co-owner of California Wild Ales and Chicago native. “The sour/American wild ale market is growing across the country and we are proud to offer California wild ale to a larger market and to offer some exclusive varieties to our 2020 Bottle Club.”

“When COVID-19 hit, we started to look for new avenues to get our beer into customer’s hands,” said co-owner Zack Brager. “We’re excited to introduce our unique brand of sour ale to these new markets – especially to the D.C. metro area where I grew up – and re-launch our popular bottle club to do something exciting for our customers,” said Zack.

The membership club includes 15 wild ales over the course of the year with seven member-only beers available upon sign-up and an additional six beers over the next six months. Membership is limited to 100 people and also includes guided tastings, a membership party, custom merchandise, and a few other surprises.
